A Ballad
Lucifer my friend gave me five horses
and one gold ruby ring,
for me to go down, down into the ground,
for me to see the sky's young face.
My horses beat their hooves, snorted, begged
to gallop like birds all over the earth,
and I believed the sun's light burned for me,
glowing like my ruby gold ring.
Oh the star-filled nights, oh the flame-filled days
I roamed the earth, roamed the earth all over,
laughing at my wild horses
and the light from my gold ring
And the heights of consciousness lie covered madness, and with snow,
but my whip whistled as I beat my horses on
and up the heights of consciousness they ran
and there I saw a girl, and her face was sad,
And music rang in her quiet voice,
and questions turned to answers in her strange eyes,
and I gave her my ring, this moon-girl,
for the shifting shades of her careless hair.
And laughing, mocking, contemptuous,
Lucifer threw open the gates of darkness: for me.
And he give me a sixth horse,
and the horse was named Despair.
